Title Upper mantle structure beneath continents: New constraints from multi-mode Rayleigh wave data in western North America and southern Africa Type Journal Article
Year 2007 Publication Geophysical research letters Abbreviated Journal
  Volume (down) 34 Issue Pages
Keywords Rayleigh waves; upper mantle; 7208 Seismology: Mantle; 7255 Seismology: Surface waves and free oscillations; 7290 Seismology: Computational seismology
Abstract We estimate the averaged 1-D shear-wave velocity of the upper mantle beneath western North America and the Kaapvaal region in southern Africa by inverting dispersion measurements of fundamental and higher Rayleigh modes recorded by ?2000 km aperture broadband arrays. The overtones at periods exceeding 25 s constrain the averaged 1-D shear-wave velocity to 650 km depth across the regional arrays. Our overtone analysis confirms the shear-wave velocity differences observed in global tomographic models with similar horizontal resolution: the western North American mantle features a prominent low velocity zone at depths 50–200 km, while the shear velocity in the upper 180–200 km of the mantle beneath southern Africa is at least 6% higher than in western North America which we interpret as the expression of a cratonic keel. There is no resolvable difference in shear-wave velocity between southern Africa and western North America below a depth of about 300 km.

Title Mantle upwellings and convective instabilities revealed by seismic tomography and helium isotope geochemistry beneath eastern Africa Type Journal Article

Abstract The relationship between intraplate volcanism and continental tectonics has been investigated for North and East Africa using a high resolution three-dimensional anisotropic tomographic model derived from seismic data of a French experiment “Horn of Africa” and existing broadband data. The joint inversion for seismic velocity and anisotropy of the upper 400 km of the mantle, and geochemical data reveals a complex interaction between mantle upwellings, and lithosphere. Two kinds of mantle upwellings can be distinguished: The first one, the Afar “plume” originates from deeper than 400 km and is characterized by enrichment in primordial 3He and 3He/4He ratios higher than those along mid-ocean ridges (MOR). The second one, associated with other Cenozoic volcanic provinces (Darfur, Tibesti, Hoggar, Cameroon), with 3He/4He ratios similar to, or lower than MOR, is a consequence of shallower upwelling. The presumed asthenospheric convective instabilities are oriented in an east-west direction, resulting from interaction between south-north asthenospheric mantle flow, main plume head and topography on the base of lithosphere.

Title Capture and blood sampling do not affect foraging behaviour, breeding success and return rate of a large seabird: the black-browed albatross Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Polar Biology Abbreviated Journal Polar Biol.
  Volume (down) 34 Issue 3 Pages 353-361
  Keywords Biomedical and Life Sciences,
Abstract During the last decades, eco-physiological studies have usually relied on the collection of blood from wild organisms in order to obtain relevant physiological measures. However, accurate estimates of the impact of capture and blood collection on performances of Polar seabird species have rarely been conducted. We investigated for the first time the effects of a blood sampling process on subsequent foraging behaviour, reproductive performance and return rate of black-browed albatrosses ( Thalassarche melanophris ) at Kerguelen Islands. We did not find any evidence that the blood sampling process as conducted in our study had detrimental effects on the breeding or foraging strategies or performance of black-browed albatrosses. Because blood collection can be performed in several different ways, we recommend that eco-physiologists conduct pilot studies to test whether their blood sampling process affects the performances of their study species.
