Abstract The nucleotide sequence of the subtilisin-encoding gene from the antactic psychotroph Bacillus TA39 was determined. The primary structure of the subtilisin precursor is composed of 420 amino acids giving rise to a mature enzyme of 309 amino acids. Asp-145, His-185 and Ser-361 are the proposed catalytic residues of the active site

Abstract A method was developed for the quantitative determination of cations and anions in Antarctic ice cores at microgL(-1) and sub-microgL(-1) levels by ion chromatography (IC), after ultra-clean decontamination procedures. Strict manipulation and decontamination procedures were used in sub-sampling, in order to minimise sample contamination. Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were determined by 12-min isocratic elution (H2SO4 eluent). Contemporaneously, in a parallel device, F-, MSA (methanesulfonic acid), Cl-, NO3- and SO4(2-) were analysed in a single 12-min run with multiple-step elution using Na2CO3/NaHCO3 as eluent. Melted ice samples were pumped from their still-closed containers (polystyrene accuvettes with polyethylene caps), shared between the two ion chromatographic systems, online filtered (0.45 microm Teflon membrane) and pre-concentrated (anions and cations pre-concentration columns) using a flow analysis system, thus avoiding uptake of contaminants from the laboratory atmosphere. Sensitivity, linear range, reproducibility and detection limit were evaluated for each chemical species. Anion or cation detection limits ranged from 0.01 to 0.15 microgL(-1) by using a relatively small sample volume (1.5 mL). Such values are significantly lower than those reported in literature for almost all the components. These methods were successfully applied to the analysis of cations and anions at trace levels in the Dome C ice core. The composition of the atmospheric aerosol for the last 850 kyr was reconstructed by high-resolution continuous chemical stratigraphies. Concentration trends in the last nine glacial-interglacial climatic cycles were shown and briefly discussed.

Abstract Juvenile king penguins develop adaptive thermogenesis after repeated immersion in cold water. However, the mechanisms of such metabolic adaptation in birds are unknown, as they lack brown adipose tissue and uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1), which mediate adaptive non-shivering thermogenesis in mammals. We used three different groups of juvenile king penguins to investigate the mitochondrial basis of avian adaptive thermogenesis . Skeletal muscle mitochondria isolated from penguins that had never been immersed in cold water showed no superoxide-stimulated proton conductance, indicating no functional avian UCP. Skeletal muscle mitochondria from penguins that had been either experimentally immersed or naturally adapted to cold water did possess functional avian UCP, demonstrated by a superoxide-stimulated, GDP-inhibitable proton conductance across their inner membrane. This was associated with a markedly greater abundance of avian UCP mRNA. In the presence (but not the absence) of fatty acids, these mitochondria also showed a greater adenine nucleotide translocase-catalysed proton conductance than those from never-immersed penguins. This was due to an increase in the amount of adenine nucleotide translocase. Therefore, adaptive thermogenesis in juvenile king penguins is linked to two separate mechanisms of uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation in skeletal muscle mitochondria: increased proton transport activity of avian UCP (dependent on superoxide and inhibited by GDP) and increased proton transport activity of the adenine nucleotide translocase (dependent on fatty acids and inhibited by carboxyatractylate).

Title First detection of polarization in jovian auroral H+3 emissions Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication A&A Abbreviated Journal
  Volume (down) 530 Issue Pages
Keywords polarization / molecular data / planets and satellites: aurorae / planets and satellites: individual: Jupiter
Abstract Context. The recent measurement of linear polarization in the Earth thermospheric oxygen red line shows that it can be a useful observable quantity to characterise the upper atmospheres conditions. Therefore, polarimetry measurements are extended to other planets. Considering that FUV emissions are not observable from the ground, the best candidates for Jupiter auroral emissions are
H3+ infrared emissions around 4µm. This ion is created after a chemical process in the jovian upper atmosphere. Then, the anisotropy responsible of the polarization cannot be the particle impact as in the Earth case
Aims. The goal of this study is to detect some potential linear polarisation in the H3+ emissions of the jovian auroral oval.
Methods. Measurements of the H3+ emissions from the south auroral oval have been performed at the UKIRT during the beginning of August 2008, using the UIST-IRPOL spectro-polarimeter. The slit have been positioned perpendicularly to the jovian rotation axis.
Data were processed by dividing the slit in 24 bins. Stokes parameters u and q, polarization degree and direction are extracted for
each bin and debiased.
Results. Polarization up to 8% is detected. More than 7 bins show polarization with confidence level above 3σ. The better signal to noise ratio appears in the main auroral oval but no clear link appears between the polarization degrees and angles and the local known
anisotropies. The angles are a bit higher than 90° in the West part of the oval and mostly around 90° for the East part.
Conclusions. This study shows that polarization is detectable in the jovian infrared auroras. However, it is impossible to link it with electric or magnetic field for the moment due to the lack of theoretical work and laboratory experiments concerning the polarization of H3+.
