Abstract Polar regions and especially Antarctica are nowadays recognised as exerting a major control upon the global Mean Sea Level (MSL) directly linked to climate changes. Monitoring and understanding the geodynamical behaviour of these regions is then of critical importance. The long-term displacement (or velocity) of reference sites helps constraining the ice sheet evolution prediction models. Several geodetic space techniques, such as GPS, observe displacements of such reference sites. In Antarctica, in addition to numerous GPS stations, four DORIS stations are permanently operating: Belgrano, Rothera, Syowa, Terre Adélie. In addition to the permanent DORIS stations, episodic DORIS campaigns took also place at Dome C / Concordia and on Sorsdal and Lambert glaciers. In this paper, we first present general information concerning the stations and the campaigns (exact location, period of measurements, etc). We then discuss the solutions obtained by different analysis centres (when available) for all DORIS stations in the Antarctic region. In particular, we use several ITRFs (from the early ITRF96 to ITRF2000) to see their impact on the derived velocities in Antarctica. An emphasis is given to the investigation and possible explanation of differences observed between each solution. Finally, we compare at these stations, the results of DORIS observations to the solutions from other geodetic techniques (GPS, VLBI) and to the results of repeated absolute gravity measurements (when available).

Abstract Based on observed atmospheric CO2 concentration and an inverse method, we estimate that the Southern Ocean sink of CO2 has weakened between 1981 and 2004 by 0.08 PgC/y per decade relative to the trend expected from the large increase in atmospheric CO2. This weakening is attributed to the observed increase in Southern Ocean winds resulting from human activities and projected to continue in the future. Consequences include a reduction in the efficiency of the Southern Ocean sink of CO2 in the short term (~25 years) and possibly a higher level of stabilization of atmospheric CO2 on a multicentury time scale.

Abstract Seabirds constitute a key group of marine top-predators. While foraging seabirds prey mostly on schooling pelagic fish, crustaceans and squids. Because pelagic seabirds distribute over a wide spatial range they are sensitive to physical and biotic changes at several temporal scales. In the last 20 years bio-logging science has revolutionized our knowledge of how seabirds can act as monitors of prey stocks. One of the most interesting applications of data loggers on seabirds is determination of the distribution and availability of prey on which we have little knowledge such as mesopelagic fish, squid, and krill. There are now known to be several variables measurable by data loggers which estimate the number of prey caught by free-ranging seabirds. Such data loggers, in combined deployment on seabirds with time-depth or movement loggers (which record acceleration in one or more dimensions) provide data sets representing dependable indices of prey availability. While knowledge of seabird behaviour continues to improve, we still know little about the relationships between seabird behaviour and prey density/availability. Unravelling these relationships is a key step to calibrating the proxies of prey availability recorded by data loggers. Continuing to develop the use of instrumented seabirds as bio-indicators of marine resources is important in the quest to understand marine ecosystems and the conservation of top- predators.

Abstract Our objective is to review recent advances in ionospheric and thermospheric modeling that
aim at supporting space weather services. The emphasis is placed on achievements of European
research groups involved in the COST Action 724. Ionospheric and thermospheric modeling on time
scales ranging from a few minutes to several days is fundamental for predicting space weather effects
on the Earth's ionosphere and thermosphere. Space weather affects telecommunications, navigation
and positioning systems, radars, and technology in space. We start with an overview of the physical
effects of space weather on the upper atmosphere and on systems operating at this regime. Recent
research on drivers and development of proxies applied to support space weather modeling efforts are
presented, with emphasis on solar radiation indices, solar wind drivers and ionospheric indices. The
models are discussed in groups corresponding to the physical effects they are dealing with, i.e.
bottomside ionospheric effects, trans-ionospheric effects, neutral density and scale height variations,
and spectacular space weather effects such as auroral emissions. Another group of models dealing with
global circulation are presented here to demonstrate 3D modeling of the space environment. Where
possible we present results concerning comparison of the models' performance belonging to the same
group. Finally we give an overview of European systems providing products for the specification and
forecasting of space weather effects on the upper atmosphere, which have implemented operational
versions of several ionospheric and thermospheric models.
