Abstract The opening of a new magnetic observatory is one of the activities aimed at by the creation of a scientific base at DomeC, Antarctica (lat. 75° 06’S, long. 123° 21’E, elev. 3200m). There are many reasons supporting this objective: all Antarctic magnetic observatories providing absolute values are located along the shore and are therefore subject to coast effects and crustal field contamination. DomeC and Vostok will be so far the sole observatories free from these effects. On one hand, high latitude absolute observatories are very useful to global or regional modeling based upon satellite data, because, at high latitudes, only total field measurements can be used due to the strong influence of field aligned currents. On the other hand, the availability of magnetic data from the well distributed observatories of Terra Nova Bay (TNB), Scott Base (SBA), Dumont d’Urville (DRV), Casey (CSY) and Vostok (VOS) will provide strong support to auroral and polar cap ionosphere studies as well as asymmetry analyses between Northern and Southern hemispheres. This paper summarizes the results gathered during three summer campaigns, in 1999-2000, 2001 and 2003-2004.

Abstract Based on a composite of several measurement series performed on ice samples stored at -25 °C or -50 °C, we present and discuss the first δO2/N2 record of trapped air from the EPICA Dome C (EDC) ice core covering the period between 300 and 800 ka (thousands of years before present). The samples stored at -25 °C show clear gas loss affecting the precision and mean level of the δO2/N2 record. Two different gas loss corrections are proposed to account for this effect, without altering the spectral properties of the original datasets. Although processes at play remain to be fully understood, previous studies have proposed a link between surface insolation, ice grain properties at close-off, and δO2/N2 in air bubbles, from which orbitally tuned chronologies of the Vostok and Dome Fuji ice core records have been derived over the last four climatic cycles. Here, we show that limitations caused by data quality and resolution, data filtering, and uncertainties in the orbital tuning target limit the precision of this tuning method for EDC. Moreover, our extended record includes two periods of low eccentricity. During these intervals (around 400 ka and 750 ka), the matching between δO2/N2 and the different insolation curves is ambiguous because some local insolation maxima cannot be identified in the δO2/N2 record (and vice versa). Recognizing these limitations, we restrict the use of our δO2/N2 record to show that the EDC3 age scale is generally correct within its published uncertainty (6 kyr) over the 300–800 ka period.

Abstract The Copernicus Sentinel-3 Surface Topography Mission (STM) Land Altimetry provides valuable surface elevation information over inland waters, sea ice, and land ice, thanks to its synthetic aperture radar (SAR) altimeter and its orbit that covers high-latitude polar regions. To ensure that these measurements are reliable and to maximise the return on investment, adequate validation of the geophysical retrieval methods, processing algorithms, and corrections must be performed using independent observations. The EU-ESA project St3TART (started July 2021) aims to generalise the concept of Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs) for the Copernicus Sentinel-3 STM. This work has gathered existing data, made new observations during field campaigns, and ensured that these observations meet the criteria of FRM standards so that they can be used to validate Sentinel-3 STM Land Altimetry products operationally. A roadmap for the operational provision of the FRM, including the definition, consolidation, and identification of the most relevant and cost-effective methods and protocols to be maintained, supported, or implemented, has been developed. The roadmap includes guidelines for SI traceability, definitions of FRM measurement procedures, processing methods, and uncertainty budget estimations.

Abstract The primary goal of our research project is to improve on the current knowledge of the three dimensional structure of the Antarctic lithosphere producing a new continental-scale tomographic model. Seismic tomographic studies of Antarctica already exist, but they are generally based on earthquake data. Their resolution is limited not only by the scanty number of seismic stations on the continent — often, temporary stations installed on ice, whose quality is not on par with that of permanent seismic stations installed on rock — but also by seismicity being only present on the plate boundary. The strategy we are using is to apply noise interferometric techniques to the continuous data recorded by seismic stations in Antarctica. This approach allows us to extract more information out of the available data, which is mostly made by seismic noise. This method may show particolar value in Antarctica, considering the absence of continental seismicity. Interferometric techniques have shown unquestioned ability to map crustal structure using microseismic data, but also capacity to image mantle structure using the long-period seismic hum. Instead of a classical cross-correlation, we are using a phase cross correlation approach, which appears to be more robust than the classical one in our use case, where input data is often not very clean. The results obtained with the two techniques will be shown and compared. Here, we illustrate our current workflow, the present status of the analysis and the problems and challenges encountered while working with such difficult data, along with the strategies implemented to dynamically identify and discard problematic stations and data sections.
