Abstract |
The current Solar System architecture is aheritage of the protoplanetary disk that surrounded the young
Sun, 4.56 Gy ago. Primitive extraterrestr ial objects provide means to trace back the primordial composi-
tion and radial distribution of matter in this disk. Here, we present acombined micro-IR, Raman, chem-
ical and isotopic study of two ultracarbonaceous micrometeorites recovered from Antar ctica (UCAMMs).
This study reveals particles containing an unusually high nitrogen- and deuterium-rich organic matter
analogous to a polyaromatic hydrogenated carbon nitride, characterized by nitrogen concentration with
bulk atomic N/C ratios of 0.05 and 0.12 (locallyexceeding 0.15).We propose that such nitrogen-rich car-
bonaceous material can be formed by energetic irradiations of nitrogen-rich ices in very low temperature
regions of the Solar System. Such conditions are encountered at the surface of small objects beyond the
trans-neptunian region. UCAMMs provide unique insights on physico-chemical processes that occurred
beyond the nitrogen snow-line, revealing orga nic material from the extreme outer regions of the Solar
System that cannot be investigated by remote sensing methods. |

Abstract |
The study presents major and trace element compositions of whole-rocks and minerals of 24 spinel harzburgite xenoliths from the Lac Michèle locality in the northern part of the Kerguelen Archipelago (South Indian Ocean). The samples are modally homogeneous and large enough to provide representative whole-rock samples. Their Mg# are high (0.91 to 0.93) and they have 16–29wt.% orthopyroxene (opx) and low clinopyroxene contents (0.1–2.8wt.%). They display a wide range of serpentinisation, which result in LOI contents ranging from 0 to 3.5wt.%. The spinel-bearing harzburgites from Lac Michèle are the most refractory peridotites identified so far among peridotite xenoliths available on the Kerguelen Archipelago and within the oceanic lithosphere. By contrast with most of the peridotite xenoliths from Kerguelen, they have been more preserved from post-formation processes such as metasomatic processes. The major and trace element compositions of the least serpentinised spinel harzburgites indicate an origin by ~30% of polybaric decompression fractional melting between 5GPa and ≤1GPa. Thus, the spinel harzburgites from Lac Michèle, situated at the top of the Kerguelen lithospheric mantle, are residues of melting that took place over a broad range of depth and mostly in the garnet stability field. Our results, in comparison with published data on mantle xenoliths worldwide, show that spinel harzburgites from Lac Michèle have major and modal compositions that fall in the range of cratonic peridotites rather than abyssal peridotites, oceanic island peridotites, subduction zones peridotites and off-cratonic peridotites. This indicates (i) they formed in similar condition as for the ancient continental lithospheric mantle or (ii) they are fragment of ancient continental lithospheric mantle incorporated in the Kerguelen plateau. |

Abstract |
Many peridotite xenoliths sampled at ocean islands appear to have strongly refractory major element and modal compositions. To better constrain the chemistry, abundance and origin of these ultra-refractory rocks we compiled a large number of data for xenoliths from nine groups of ocean islands. The xenoliths were filtered petrographically for signs of melt infiltration and modal metasomatism, and the samples affected by these processes were excluded. The xenolith suites from most ocean islands are dominated by ultra-refractory harzburgites. Exceptions are the Hawaii and Tahiti peridotites, which are more fertile and contain primary clinopyroxene, and the Cape Verde suite, which contains both ultra-refractory and more fertile xenoliths. Ultra-refractory harzburgites are characterized by the absence of primary clinopyroxene, low whole-rock Al2O3, CaO, FeO/MgO and heavy rare earth element (HREE) concentrations, low Al2O3 in orthopyroxene (generally < 3 wt %), high Cr-number in spinel (0{middle dot}3-0{middle dot}8) and high forsterite contents in olivine (averages > 91{middle dot}5). They are therefore on average significantly more refractory than peridotites dredged and drilled from mid-ocean ridges and fracture zones. Moreover, their compositions resemble those of oceanic forearc peridotites. The formation of ultra-refractory ocean island harzburgites requires potential temperatures above those normally observed at modern mid-ocean ridges, and/or fluid fluxed conditions. Some ultra-refractory ocean island harzburgites give high Os model ages (up to 3300 Ma), showing that their formation significantly pre-dates the oceanic crust in the area. A genetic relationship with the host plume is considered unlikely based on textural observations, equilibration temperatures and pressures, inferred physical properties, and the long-term depleted Os and Sr isotope compositions of some of the harzburgites. Although we do not exclude the possibility that some ultra-refractory ocean island harzburgites have formed at mid-ocean ridges, we favor a model in which they formed in a process spatially and temporally unrelated to the formation of the oceanic plate and the host plume. As a result of their whole-rock compositions, ultra-refractory harzburgites have a very high solidus temperature at a given pressure, low densities and very high viscosities, and will tend to accumulate at the top of the convecting mantle. They may be preserved as fragments in the convecting mantle over long periods of time and be preferentially incorporated into newly formed lithosphere. |

Abstract |
This paper reports the first rare earth element (REE) concentrations in accreted ice refrozen from sub-glacial Lake Vostok (East Antarctica). REE were determined in various sections of the Vostok ice core in order to geochemically characterize its impurities. Samples were obtained from accreted ice and, for comparison, from the upper glacier ice of atmospheric origin (undisturbed, disturbed and glacial flour ice). REE concentrations ranged between 0.856 pg g1 for Ce and 0.00350.24 pg g1 for Lu in glacier ice, and between <0.124 pg g1 for Ce and <0.00040.02 pg g1 for Lu in accreted ice. Interestingly, the REE concentrations in the upper accreted ice (AC1; characterized by visible aggregates containing a mixture of very fine terrigenous particles) and in the deeper accreted ice (AC2; characterized by transparent ice) are lower than those in fresh water and seawater, respectively. We suggest that such ultra-low concentrations are unlikely to be representative of the real REE content in Lake Vostok, but instead may reflect phase exclusion processes occurring at the ice/water interface during refreezing. In particular, the uneven spatial distribution (on the order of a few cm) and the large range of REE concentrations observed in AC1 are consistent with the occurrence/absence of the aggregates in adjacent ice, and point to the presence of solid-phase concentration/exclusion processes occurring within separate pockets of frazil ice during AC1 formation. Interestingly, if the LREE enrichment found in AC1 was not produced by chemical fractionation occurring in Lake Vostok water, this may reflect a contribution of bedrock material, possibly in combination with aeolian dust released into the lake by melting of the glacier ice. Collectively, this valuable information provides new insight into the accreted ice formation processes, the bedrock geology of East Antarctica as well as the water chemistry and circulation of Lake Vostok. |
