Abstract |
The vertical extent and impact of halogen chemistry in the Arctic springtime was investigated through balloon-based measurement of several atmospheric chemical components. Various chemical species, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone, and elemental mercury, that are modified by halogen chemistry were measured from the surface to ?300 m during late March through mid-April 2005 in Barrow, Alaska. It is observed that the halogen chemistry appears to be most active in the lowest 100–200 m of the atmosphere. The Hg vertical concentration profiles are consistent with destruction by chemistry that evolves from a species emitted from the snowpack, most likely Br2 and BrCl, and the VOC profiles also demonstrate the limited vertical scale of halogen-initiated chemistry taking place above the Arctic snowpack. |

Abstract |
We developed an inversion algorithm to determine the Source Time Function and Moment Tensor of intermediate and deep earthquakes from a set of teleseismic body wave records. The method proceeds in two stages. First, a nonlinear inversion by simulated annealing is performed to simultaneously (a) align the waveforms in time, (b) determine a common source time function, and (c) measure a collection of observed station amplitudes. The station amplitudes are then used, in a second stage, as secondary observables to invert for the moment tensors. We perform three different inversions to estimate the complete moment tensor solution, the pure deviatoric solution, and the double-couple solution. All the calculations are extremely simple and, in particular, it is not necessary to compute synthetic seismograms. The method requires well-isolated phases at different stations, which restricts its application to intermediate and deep events. The algorithm is applied to the FDSN broadband records corresponding to the period 1990–2005 of worldwide intermediate and deep seismicity (depth $\ges$100 km) of magnitude greater than 6.5. The source time functions are compared to those obtained from other studies of intermediate and deep events. The moment tensors are also systematically compared to the Harvard-CMT and USGS solutions. Both show a very good agreement with previous studies. |

Abstract |
The action of predators, such as diurnal raptors, owls, mammals or humans, influence the nature of small vertebrate fossil assemblages but currently their taphonomic features are still poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the taphonomic signature of the snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) based on an analysis of pellets collected at breeding sites located in Greenland and the Canadian Arctic. This taxon is widely distributed through the North Hemisphere and was an important predator in Pleistocene times. Taphonomic parameters suggest that, contrary to previous assumptions, B. scandiacus produces, on average, moderate digestion of incisors, molars and post-cranial elements, and should be classed as a Category 3 or Category 3/4 predator according to the terminology established by Andrews. Significant inter-site variability was observed for some of the damage considered (in particular, digestion on incisors), and a key finding is that variability and the associated statistical confidence intervals are crucial notions that should be taken into account when assessing taphonomical features, in order to reliably identify the potential predator(s) responsible for small vertebrate fossil accumulations. |

Abstract |
The microstructure and location of impurities in polar ice are of great relevance to ice core studies. We describe a reliable method to examine ice in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Specimens were cut in a cold room and could have their surfaces altered by sublimation either before (pre-etching) or after (etching) introduction to the cryo-chamber of the SEM. Pre-etching was used to smooth surfaces, whilst etching stripped away layers from the specimen surface, aiding the location of particles in situ, and allowing embedded structures to be revealed. X-ray analysis was used to determine the composition of localized impurities, which in some cases had been concentrated on the surface by etching. Examining uncoated surfaces was found to be advantageous and did not detract from qualitative X-ray analysis. Imaging uncoated was performed at low accelerating voltages and probe currents to avoid problems of surface charging. |

A tentative age scale (EDC1) for the last 45 kyr is established for the new 788-m EPICA Dome C ice core using a simple ice flow model. The age of volcanic eruptions, the end of the Younger Dryas event, and the estimated depth and age of elevated 10Be, about 41 kyr ago were used to calibrate the model parameters. The uncertainty of EDC1 is estimated to ± 10 yr for 0 to 700 yr BP, up to ± 200 yr back to 10 kyr BP, and up to ± 2 kyr back to 41 kyr BP. The age of the air in the bubbles is calculated with a firn densification model. In the Holocene the air is about 2000 yr younger than the ice and about 5500 yr during the last glacial maximum. |

Methylation reactions of gaseous elementary mercury by halogen containing molecules such as halogenomethane species CH3X (with X = Cl, Br, and I) and the dimethylchlorinium ion CH3ClCH3+ were investigated at the density functional level. With CH3X, the reaction is predicted to be almost athermic and kinetically demanding for a thermal reaction. The reaction can proceed photochemically in the visible range; therefore sunlight may increase the reaction rate. These results compare well with the experimental data. Consecutive methylation of the CH3HgX products (with X = Cl, Br, and I) and subsequent formation of CH3HgCH3 were also studied. These reactions are predicted to be kinetically inaccessible and thermodynamically unfavorable. With CH3ClCH3+, the reaction is predicted to be athermic but kinetically easy. This is due to the suitability of the methyl transfer reagent. Geometrical and electronic data were systematically analyzed in order to rationalize the results. |
