Abstract |
Abstract We present a new interhemispheric numerical model: the IRAP plasmasphere?ionosphere model (IPIM). This model describes the transport of the multispecies ionospheric plasma from one hemisphere to the other along convecting and corotating magnetic field lines, taking into account source processes at low altitude such as photoproduction, chemistry, and energization through the coupling with a kinetic code solving the transport of suprathermal electron along the field line. Among the new developments, a 16?moment?based approach is used for the transport equations in order to allow development of strong temperature anisotropy at high altitude and we consider important but often neglected effects, such as inertial acceleration (centrifugal and Coriolis). In this paper, after presenting in detail the principle of the model, we focus on preliminary results showing the original contribution of this new model. For these first runs, we simulate the convection and corotation transport of closed flux tubes in the plasmasphere for tilted/eccentric dipolar magnetic field configuration in solstice and equinox conditions. We follow different flux tubes between 1.2 and 6 Earth Radii (RE) and demonstrate the capability of the model to describe a wide range of density (above 15 orders of magnitude). The relevance of the mathematical approach used is highlighted, as anisotropies can develop above 3000?km in the plasmasphere as a result of the mirroring effect related to the anisotropic pressure tensor. Moreover, we show that the addition of inertial acceleration may become critical to describe plasma interhemispheric transport above 4RE. The ability of the model to describe the external plasmasphere is demonstrated, and innovative studies are foreseen, regarding the dynamics of the plasma along the magnetic field lines (in particular interhemispheric exchanges and ?opening?/?closure? of a flux tube). |

Abstract |
In the frame of the SUBGLACIOR project, a new type of casing has been installed for testing during the 2013/14 austral summer season at Dome Concordia station, Antarctica. The SUBGLACIOR probe requires a full fluid column up to the surface, in order to circulate fluid for icechips recovery. This makes it essential that the casing is leak-tight through the porous firn column. We have evaluated existing solutions before opting to test a new method. This new system is made of polyethylene pipes which are welded together at the surface while the casing pipes are lowered into the reamed borehole. It is simple and lightweight and allows the casing to be installed quickly with
optimum chance of being leak-tight. The installed casing has been tested both with compressed air and drilling fluids and has proven to work. |

A New Method to Quantify within Dive Foraging Behaviour in Marine Predators

Studies on diving behaviour classically divide a dive into three phases: the descent, bottom and ascent phases, with foraging assumed to occur during the bottom phase. The greater complexity of dive revealed through modern, high resolution data highlights the need to re-assess this approach and to consider a larger number of phases within individual dives. Two southern elephant seals (SES) were fitted with a head mounted Time Depth Recorder (TDR) and an accelerometer from which prey capture attempts were estimated. A Weddell seal was also fitted with a TDR. TDRs for both species recorded depth once per second. We quantified the within dive behaviour using an automated broken stick algorithm identifying the optimal number of segments within each dive. The vertical sinuosity of the segments was used to infer two types of behaviours, with highly sinuous segments indicating “hunting” and less sinuous segments indicating “transiting”. Using the broken stick method the seals alternated between “hunting” and “transit” modes with an average of 6±2 and 7±0.02 behavioural phases within each dive for the Weddell seal and SES, respectively. In SES, 77% of prey capture attempts (identified from the acceleration data) occurred in highly sinuous phases (“hunting”) as defined by our new approach. SES spent more time in transit mode within a dive, and hunting mostly occurred during the bottom phase. Conversely the Weddell seal spent more time in hunting mode which also occurred during bottom phase but occurred mostly at shallower depths. Such differences probably reflect different foraging tactics and habitat use. For both species, hunting time differs significantly from bottom time previously used as a proxy for the time spent foraging in a dive. The hunting time defined by our method therefore provides a more accurate fine-scale description of the seals' foraging behaviour. |

In the Southern Hemisphere, the prevalence of oceans and the difficulty of access to land result in reduced coverage of seismological stations, limiting our detailed knowledge of Earth’s structures and of large earthquakes sources. This situation is exacerbated inside the antarctic continent, where only two permanent seismic stations are currently available (IU.QSPA at South Pole and G.CCD). The CCD station, built in early 2000s with state‐of‐the‐art surface instrumentation and located at the French–Italian Concordia base (75° S, 123° E), has been providing seismological data since 2008. However, it suffers from several problems: the vault is deformed by the hydrostatic pressure of the snow, the firn waveguide traps anthropogenic noise from the base causing strong noise below 1 s, and a coupling defect limits the performance above 30 s on the horizontal channels. To ensure the continuity of CCD and to improve its overall performance, we started in 2014 to plan the installation of a borehole seismometer at the site. In this article, we describe in detail this renovation of CCD and some examples of data analysis. The new borehole sensor shows that short‐period disturbances are largely attenuated (−20 dB at 0.1 s) compared to the surface installation and that the horizontal channels have a lower noise level at long periods (−8 dB at 100 s). Data for all components are below the standard noise model between 0.1 and 0.2 s, which makes this sensor one of the quietest installations in the world for this bandwidth. For periods >600 s we observe atmospheric pressure‐related perturbations on the vertical component. Despite this problem, the new CCD borehole station is a success with better‐than‐expected performances at all periods <600 s. The data produced are now distributed in the world’s data centers as G.CCD.20 and we encourage the scientific community to use the data for all studies requiring seismograms from Antarctica. |

Abstract |
The geomagnetic field above the surface of the Earth in the current-free region may be expressed as the gradient of a scalar potential solving Laplace's equation. For regions with a fairly dense coverage of data at different altitudes, a regional model ought to offer a better spatial resolution of the regional field over the volume under study than a global field expanded in spherical harmonics (SH). The spherical cap harmonics analysis (SCHA) is an attractive regional modelling tool having close relationship with global SH. With the SCHA adopted so far, difficulties arise in upward continuation and in establishing a relationship between global and local Gauss coefficients. Such a relationship would be useful, for instance, for introducing prior constraint on an inverse problem dealing with the estimation of local Gauss coefficients based upon a local data set. In this paper, we show that these difficulties are overcome if the SCHA modelling is formulated as a boundary value (BV) problem in a cone bounded radially by the surface of the Earth and an upper surface suitable for satellite data, and bounded laterally in order to encompass a specific region of study. Although the example worked out here applies only to a limited class of fields, which verifies some special flux condition, the ideas behind this formalism are quite general and should offer a new way of processing data in a bounded region of space. |

Abstract |
This study presents measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations in the 80 m of firn air at the international drilling site of NEEM in Greenland (2452 m, 77°25.8 N, 51°06.4 W). Using inverse modeling, we were able to reconstruct the atmospheric GEM trend at this Arctic site over the last 60 years. We show discrepancies between this record and the previous firn record of Summit. This could be attributed to experimental biases and/or differences in air mass transport. A multisite inverse model was used to derive an atmospheric scenario reconciling the two firn records. We show that GEM seasonal variations are very limited at these high altitude sites and thus probably unaffected by spring/summer photochemistry. The firn reconstructions suggest an increase of GEM concentrations since the 1950s peaking in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A decrease is then observed with minimum GEM concentrations around 1995–2000. The reconstruction compares well with historical mercury (Hg) releases and recent simulations of atmospheric Hg. Our optimal GEM scenario does not allow to categorically conclude on recent trends for GEM concentrations over the 2000–2010 decade. |
