Abstract |
Abstract: Within the framework of the International Polar Year and the EU Carbo-Ocean project, a new atmospheric monitoring station has been established in Ivittuut, southern Greenland. One of the main goals for the choice of this location is to examine the role of the North Atlantic Ocean on the global and regional carbon cycle. Concurrent measurements of atmospheric CO2 and O2 enable us to calculate the Atmospheric Potential Oxygen (APO) a tracer of air-sea gas exchange of O2, and from which, given certain assumption, the strength of marine biological activity can be elucidated. Meteorological sensors and high precision analyzers have been installed at Ivittuut (61.21°N, 48.17°W) during a field season in summer 2007. Since September 2007, continuous measurements of CO2 and O2 have been recorded. Regular sampling are done in flasks and independently analyzed at LSCE and MPI for quality control, also providing complementary trace gas and isotopic measurements.
We will present the continuous dataset obtained at Ivittuut Station and will discuss the results along three main aspects. First, we will show a preliminary data filtering based on meteorological data criteria (wind speed and direction) to identify air mass origins (and corresponding CO2 and O2 concentration levels) and compare the results to back trajectories from the Hysplit4 model. Second, we will present a comparison of the APO concentrations derived from the data and those obtained with the OPA-PISCES coupled ocean circulation/biogeochemical model. Finally based on our APO results, we will present a first estimate of oceanic and land biotic carbon fluxes. |
