Abstract Abstract The Concordiasi project is making innovative observations of the atmosphere above Antarctica. The most important goals of the Concordiasi are as follows: To enhance the accuracy of weather prediction and climate records in Antarctica through the assimilation of in situ and satellite data, with an emphasis on data provided by hyperspectral infrared sounders. The focus is on clouds, precipitation, and the mass budget of the ice sheets. The improvements in dynamical model analyses and forecasts will be used in chemical-transport models that describe the links between the polar vortex dynamics and ozone depletion, and to advance the understanding of the Earth system by examining the interactions between Antarctica and lower latitudes. To improve our understanding of microphysical and dynamical processes controlling the polar ozone, by providing the first quasi-Lagrangian observations of stratospheric ozone and particles, in addition to an improved characterization of the 3D polar vortex dynamics.   Title Role of seabird colonies on nutrient cycle processes in the oceanic ecosystems: the case of the King penguin in the Southern Ocean. Type Master

Abstract Macronutrients are necessary for the growth and development of phytoplankton, ie for primary production in the oceans, which is the first level of all trophic networks. In pelagic ecosystems of the oceans, land is a fundamental source of nutrients but is rare and limited to archipelagos, which represent exclusive breeding places for upper level predators (marine mammals and seabirds). These animals could be crucial elements of nutrient cycles by significantly mediating the transfer of macronutrients from land to the oceanic system. We determined macronutrients concentrations (phosphate, silicate, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate) in water samples collected from October 2007 to January 2010 on the Possession Island, Crozet archipelago, where ca. 1.5 million king penguins Aptenodytes patagonicus breed. The first part of our study aimed at investigating whether the presence of this long-lived species at several places of the island could significantly account for variations in nutrient concentrations. We showed a general enrichment in nutrients along the rivers’ path, from inside the island to the sea, which was related to the presence of king penguin colonies. Then, as the phenology of king penguin colonies changes according to the breeding cycle, we used data from a given colony in order to test whether relationships existed between seasonal variations in the number and activity or stage of birds on the island, and those in nutrient concentrations at sea. This second part of our study suggested that relationships between variations in nutrient concentrations and those of the phenology of the colony depended on the nutrients.
