Abstract Abstract. Preliminary site testing datasets suggest that Dome C in Antarctica is one of the best sites on Earth for astronomical observations in the 200 to 500-μm regime, i.e. for far-infrared (FIR) and submillimetre(submm) astronomy. We present an overview of potentialscience cases that could be addressed with a large telescope facility atDome C. This paper also includes a presentation of the current knowledgeabout the site characterics in terms of atmospheric transmission, stability, sky noise and polar constraints on telescopes. Current andfuture site testing campaigns are finally described.

Title Submillimetre/TeraHertz Astronomy at Dome C with CEA Filled Bolometer Array Type Conference - International - Article without Reading Comitee
Year 2007 Publication EAS Publications Series Abbreviated Journal
Volume 25 Issue Pages 321-326

Abstract Abstract Submillimetre/TeraHertz (e.g. 200, 350, 450 m) astronomy is the prime technique to unveil the birth and early evolution of a broad range of astrophysical objects. A major obstacle to carry out submm observations from ground is the atmosphere. Preliminary site testing and atmospheric transmission models tend to demonstrate that Dome C could offer the best conditions on Earth for submm/THz astronomy. The CAMISTIC project aims to install a filled bolometer-array camera with 1616 pixels on IRAIT at Dome C and explore the 200-m windows for potential ground-based observations.

Title Dome C : the best accessible site on Earth for submillimetre astronomy Type Conference - National - Poster
Year 2009 Publication Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages
Keywords
Abstract The Italian-French station Concordia at Dome C is the perfect site to conduct submillimetre observations.

Site testing started intensively in 2007-2008 and is still in progress. After SUMMIT08, the next step is to determine the stability of sky brightness with CAMISTIC, a bolometer camera, which will be installed on IRAIT, an infrared telescope built at Dome C.

To complete the Herschel Space Observatory and the ALMA interferometer observations, a large telescope facility at Concordia would study in the submillimetre range :
The early evolution of galaxies and the Universe
The formation of stars
The evolution of interstellar matter
The histories of planetary systems
