  Abstract On the occasion of the publication of the proceedings of the Third International Biologging Science Symposium, we present a summary of the incidence of biologging in studies of animal behaviour. Studies investigating diving activity were used as a proxy to examine the use of a biologging technology. Specifically, studies referenced in the Penguiness Book, an internet-based diving database, were used to examine: (1) on which taxa of diving animals biologging is principally used; (2) which countries are the principal users and producers of biologging technology; and (3) the incidence of this approach in peer-reviewed publications. Each of these items is discussed in the light of the intrinsic limitations of biologging approaches.

  Abstract A flare on 2003 October 28 produced a relativistic particle event at Earth, although the active region AR 10486 was located to the east of the central meridian of the Sun. The paper considers features related to the acceleration at the Sun and the propagation to the Earth of energetic particles in this event, which occurred on a disturbed interplanetary background caused by preceding activity on the Sun and a corotating high-speed solar wind stream. From a study of the onset times of the event at different neutron monitors, we conclude that the earliest arriving solar particles were neutrons. The first relativistic protons arrived a few minutes later. Among relativistic solar protons (RSP), two populations could clearly be distinguished: prompt and delayed ones. The prompt solar protons caused an impulse-like increase at a few neutron monitor stations. The delayed solar protons arrived at Earth 0.5 hours later. Both prompt and delayed relativistic protons arrived at Earth from the antisunward direction. On the other hand, subrelativistic electrons that were traced by their radio emission from meter waves (Nançay Radioheliograph and Decametric Array) to kilometer waves (Wind/WAVES) are accompanied by metric radio emission in the western solar hemisphere, far from the flaring active region. We propose a scenario that reconciles the unusual features of energetic particles at the Earth with the observed structure of the interplanetary magnetic field, which suggests the Earth is at the interface between an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) and a corotating stream during the event. In this scenario the high-energy protons and electrons are accelerated in the flaring active region, injected into the eastern leg of an ICME loop rooted in the active region, and reach the Earth from the antisunward direction after passing through the summit of the loop. We attribute the promptly escaping subrelativistic electrons to acceleration in the western solar hemisphere and propagation along the nominal Parker spiral.

  Abstract Spherical cap harmonic analysis (SCHA) has become a common tool for the regional modeling of potential fields since its introduction by Haines (1985). The fact that SCHA satisfies Laplace equation and the possibility of representing high-frequency fields with a small number of coefficients (compared to the global spherical harmonic analysis) made SCHA the preferred choice for the development, for example, of magnetic field models at national scale. However, Thébault et al. (2006a) demonstrated that the traditional SCHA presented some deficiencies, in particular related to the inversion of multilevel data sets. The authors presented the R-SCHA technique as an alternative method in which the introduction of a new set of basis functions and boundary conditions solved this issue. In this paper we present some numerical comparisons between the SCHA and R-SCHA techniques applied with different synthetic vector data sets, from near-surface main field, main difference, and crustal field data simulating a World Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map subset. Other analyses are carried out with synthetic vector data set that mimics the expected data distribution from a multisatellite mission like the forthcoming European Swarm mission. No regularization, weighting, or ad hoc procedures are applied to the synthetic vector data, and a cap of 7° aperture is considered. The numerical analyses show that SCHA is a satisfying approximation in a band-limited spectral region that depends on the cap's size. It does not work correctly either for main field or for the short-scale crustal field modeling. These aspects are supported by equations illustrating why SCHA may fail. On the contrary, R-SCHA converges more slowly than SCHA but is valid in all cases. It gives a consistent set of regional coefficients and fits the radial variation of the field in a realistic way. At last, the special case of data incompatibility shows that R-SCHA does not fit incompatible data while SCHA assimilates most of them. These results should help the scientific community to evaluate the level of approximation needed for the development of regional magnetic field models in the era of the European Space Agency Swarm mission.

  Abstract We have recently proposed the revised spherical cap harmonic analysis (R-SCHA) modeling technique. The new mathematical functions represent faithfully the spatial variations of potential fields in a restricted area. In this paper, we tackle the inverse problem and outline the efficiency of the new basis functions with respect to real magnetic data. Processing simultaneously repeat stations, observatory, aeromagnetic, and CHAMP satellite data provides our first vector lithospheric field model over France, which extends from surface to 500 km of altitude. The magnetic field is represented with a minimum horizontal spatial representation of 40 km at the mean Earth radius. The magnetic lithospheric map consistency is confirmed with a comparison to known geological features. The model variation with altitude also suggests that the major French magnetic anomaly, the Paris basin anomaly, is produced by a deep-rooted geological structure. These results demonstrate the superiority of regional modeling over global modeling for delineating small-scale details in the lithospheric field. In view of forthcoming satellite missions, like Swarm, the revised spherical cap harmonic analysis method will help to accurately represent the lithospheric field for more detailed geological interpretations.

  Abstract We estimate the averaged 1-D shear-wave velocity of the upper mantle beneath western North America and the Kaapvaal region in southern Africa by inverting dispersion measurements of fundamental and higher Rayleigh modes recorded by ?2000 km aperture broadband arrays. The overtones at periods exceeding 25 s constrain the averaged 1-D shear-wave velocity to 650 km depth across the regional arrays. Our overtone analysis confirms the shear-wave velocity differences observed in global tomographic models with similar horizontal resolution: the western North American mantle features a prominent low velocity zone at depths 50–200 km, while the shear velocity in the upper 180–200 km of the mantle beneath southern Africa is at least 6% higher than in western North America which we interpret as the expression of a cratonic keel. There is no resolvable difference in shear-wave velocity between southern Africa and western North America below a depth of about 300 km.

  Abstract Two sets of radiosounding measurements were taken at Dome C (Antarctica) in December 2003 and January 2003 and 2004, using RS80-A, RS80-H, and RS90 Vaisala radiosondes, and from March to May 2005, employing the RS92 model. They were examined following accurate correction procedures to remove the main relative humidity dry bias and the temperature and humidity lag errors. The results showed that a strong cooling usually characterizes the thermal conditions of the whole troposphere from December/January to April/May, with an average temperature decrease from 245 to 220 K at the ground, of around 10 K at upper tropospheric levels, and of more than 15 K in the lower stratosphere. The relative humidity data were found to be affected by dry bias of 5–10%, on average, for the RS80-A and RS80-H Humicap sensors and by smaller percentages for the other sensors. The mean monthly vertical profiles of absolute humidity were found to decrease sharply throughout the troposphere, especially within the first 3 km, and to diminish considerably passing from December/January to March/April/May, with average values of precipitable water decreasing from 0.75 to 0.28 mm, median values from 0.69 to 0.25 mm, and first and third quartiles from 0.60 to 0.22 mm and from 0.87 to 0.34 mm, respectively. The results demonstrate that Dome C (where a permanent scientific station has been open for winter operations since austral winter 2005) is a site of comparable quality to the South Pole for both validation of satellite radiance measurements and astronomic observations in the infrared, submillimetric, and millimetric wavelength range, performed with large telescopes that cannot be carried on satellites.

  Abstract Considerable efforts are being made worldwide to upgrade tide gauge networks using new technologies. Because of the unique location of the Kerguelen Islands, the measurement of sea level there has received particular attention, with up to four systems equipped with modern sensors functioning simultaneously (two pressure tide gauges, a radar tide gauge, and a GPS-equipped buoy). We analysed and compared the sea level data obtained with these systems from 2003 to 2010, together with a time series of tide pole observations. This is the first time that a multi-comparison study with tide gauges has been undertaken over such a long time span and that the stability of modern radar tide gauges has been examined. The multi-comparison enabled us to evaluate the performance of the tide gauges in several frequency ranges, identify errors and estimate their magnitude. The drift of the pressure sensors (up to 8.0 mm/yr) was found to be one of the most relevant sources of systematic error. Other sources of difference such as clock drift, scale error and different locations of the instruments were also detected. After correcting the time series of sea level for these errors we estimated an upper bound for the radar instrumental error in field condition at ~0.3 cm.

  Abstract The Traill island model of Gilg et al. (2003) is a landmark attempt at mechanistic modelling of the cyclic population dynamics of rodents, focusing on a high Arctic community. It models the dynamics of one prey, the collared lemming, and four predators : the stoat, the Arctic fox, the long-tailed skua and the snowy owl. In the present short note, we first summarize how the model works in light of theory on seasonally forced predator-prey systems, with a focus on the temporal dynamics of predation rates. We show notably how the impact of generalist predation, which is able here to initiate population declines, differs slightly from that of generalist predation in other mechanistic models of rodent-mustelid interactions such as Turchin & Hanski (1997). We then provide a low-dimensional approximation with a single generalist predator compartment that mimics the essential features of the Traill island model: cycle periodicity, amplitude, shape, as well as generalist-induced declines. This simpler model should be broadly applicable to model other lemming populations that predominantly grow under the snow during the winter period. Matlab computer codes for Gilg et al. (2003), its two-dimensional approximation, as well as alternative lemming population dynamics models are provided.
