  Title Variation of isotope composition in kelps from Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) | SpringerLink Type Journal

  Abstract Kelp-derived detritus is a potential food item at the base level of marine food webs. A good knowledge of the factors that influence stable isotope composition in kelps is essential for reliable food web models. The variation of stable isotope signatures was analysed in three species of kelp in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Between 15 and 2.5 m depth, towards higher photon fluence rate, Alaria esculenta was gradually enriched in 13C while 15N did not change. The carbon/nitrogen ratio decreased with depth. 2- and 3-year-old kelp individuals had significantly higher δ15N values in their blades than 5- and 6-year-old ones. C/N ratio in blades remained statistically the same over the range of 2–6 years old plants. A two-way ANOVA did not show any interactive effects between depth and age group. A. esculenta as well as Saccharina latissima and Laminaria digitata exhibited enrichment in heavy carbon isotopes in the blades compared to the stipes, while within each species, δ15N values remained the same between blades and stipes. A more detailed analysis of kelp blades showed that independent of location in the fjord, year or season, and species, young tissue was more enriched in 13C than meristem and that decaying apical tissue was depleted relative to young tissue. The degree of this 13C depletion varied with kelp species. Meristem tissue appeared most uniform in the blades compared to young and decaying tissues and its δ13C signature was characteristic for each species with no significant difference in δ15N values. Decaying tissue showed no difference in δ13C between species. Carbon and nitrogen contents along the blades were species-specific and varied with growing location and year or season. Some advice is given on the temporal, spatial, and tissue-related choice of samples for different research objectives.

  Title Pheomelanin-based coloration is related to individual quality and oxidative stress in blue petrels Type Journal

  Abstract In several species, the rusty color of hair or feathers is due to pheomelanin pigments, whose adaptive function is unknown. Pheomelanin may be costly because it is phototoxic and its production consumes a key intracellular antioxidant. Pheomelanin-based traits are, however, positively associated with individual quality in several bird species, where they have thus been suggested to have evolved through sexual selection. Here we investigated the signaling potential of the pheomelanin-based coloration of the crown feathers in the blue petrel. Although this pelagic seabird is nocturnal at the breeding colony and breeds within deep burrows, it might use visual communication when settled on the water during daytime. We tested the correlation between crown color and several fitness-related traits, and we found that higher-quality females displayed less-orange crown than poorer-quality females. This result is inconsistent with an adaptive function of pheomelanin-based coloration in inter-, or intra-, sexual selection in females. We suggest that it might, however, be in line with a signaling function of eumelanin-based coloration, if inter-individual variations in orange coloration are mainly due to eumelanin-to-pheomelanin ratio, rather than to pheomelanin quantity. In contrast to females, we did not find strong evidence for associations between melanin-based coloration and individual quality in males, suggesting sex-specific selective pressures on melanin-based traits in this species.

  Abstract In vertebrates, developmental conditions can affect not only fledging success but also the phenotype of the offspring, with potential long-term consequences on adult performance. However, surprisingly the potential impact of anthropogenic disturbance on developing chicks is rarely investigated, notably in Antarctic wildlife. In this study, we specifically investigated the effects of repeated nest visits, capture, and handling on offspring survival and several complementary offspring phenotypic traits in the Snow Petrel (Pagodroma nivea) chicks after thermal emancipation. We did not find any significant effect of our disturbance protocol on the morphology (body size, body mass, body condition), the physiology (breath rate, stress-induced corticosterone levels) and the behaviour (defense behaviour) of developing Snow Petrels. This specific disturbance protocol did not have any significant effect on chick survival, but there was a non-significant trend towards a lower survival for the disturbed group (p?=?0.1006), which showed an especially high mortality during a period of repeated snow storms. To conclude, investigator disturbance seems to have little effect on Snow Petrel chicks after thermal emancipation, but to remain cautious, we recommend to avoid capture and handling of Snow Petrel chicks during or soon after inclement weather.
