Title Kittiwake eggs viewed by conspecifics and predators: implications for colour signal evolution Type Journal

Abstract Colour traits evolve under the antagonistic selective pressures of increasing detectability to intended receivers (e.g. conspecifics) while minimizing detectability to unintended receivers (e.g. predators). Primarily selected for camouflage, avian egg coloration has also been suggested to have intraspecific signalling functions. A first step in assessing the relative importance of camouflage/communication requires quantifying detectability for different visual systems, which is rarely done. Here, we compared brightness and colour contrasts of black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) speckled and soiled eggs as seen from a distance by conspecifics and their main avian predator, the common raven (Corvus corax). We also examined how egg speckling and soiling deposition on incubated eggs affected egg detectability and egg coloration variability. We found that eggs were detectable by both species, but were more conspicuous to conspecifics than to predators. Egg speckling reduced brightness contrast and increased colour contrast, contributing to reducing detectability by predators while maintaining potential for intraspecific communication, respectively. Soiling reduced egg detectability for both perceivers, but soiled eggs remained more conspicuous to conspecifics than predators. Moreover, soiling did not homogenize the clutch signature of egg colour and speckling, thus allowing intraspecific exploitation of information on female quality that egg coloration may convey or individual clutch recognition. We suggest that further studies of egg colour adaptive functions and evolution should consider all perceivers as well as soiling deposition, an overlooked mechanism that may be favoured by selection against predation.

Abstract Inbreeding, i.e. the mating of genetically related individuals, can lead to reduced fitness and is considered to be a major selective force of mate choice. Although inbreeding avoidance has been found in numerous taxa, individuals may face constraints when pairing, leading to mating with suboptimal partners. In such circumstances, individuals that are able to avoid factors exacerbating detrimental effects of inbreeding should be favoured. Using the socially and genetically monogamous black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), we explored whether the detrimental effects of inbreeding are exacerbated by sperm ageing (i.e. the post-meiotic senescence of sperm cells, mainly occurring within the female tracts after copulation), and whether they can be mitigated by behavioural tactics. First, by experimentally manipulating the age of the fertilizing sperm, we found that hatching failure due to sperm ageing increased with higher genetic similarity between mates. We then investigated whether more genetically similar pairs exhibited mating behaviours that prevent fertilization by old sperm. The more genetically similar mates were, the less likely they were to copulate early in the reproductive season and the more females performed post-copulatory sperm ejections. By flexibly adapting their behaviour in response to within-pair genetic similarity, kittiwakes may avoid exacerbation of inbreeding costs due to sperm ageing.

Abstract Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) still enjoys widespread popularity among lichenologists as one of the fastest and simplest analytical strategies, today remaining the primary method of assessing the secondary product content of lichens. The pitfalls associated with this approach are well known as TLC leads to characterizing compounds by comparison with standards rather than properly identifying them, which might lead to erroneous assignments, accounting for the long-held interest in hyphenating TLC with dedicated identification tools. As such, commercially available TLC/Mass Spectrometry (MS) interfaces can be easily connected to any brand of mass spectrometer without adjustments. The spots of interest are extracted from the TLC plate to retrieve mass spectrometric signals within one minute, thereby ensuring accurate identification of the chromatographed substances. The results of this hyphenated strategy for lichens are presented here by 1) describing the TLC migration and direct MS analysis of single lichen metabolites of various structural classes, 2) highlighting it through the chemical profiling of crude acetone extracts of a set of lichens of known chemical composition, and finally 3) applying it to a lichen of unknown profile, Usnea trachycarpa.

Abstract A conceptual model is used in combination with observational analysis to understand regime transitions of near-surface temperature inversions at night as well as in Arctic conditions. The model combines a surface energy budget with a bulk parameterization for turbulent heat transport. Energy fluxes or feedbacks due to soil and radiative heat transfer are accounted for by a ?lumped parameter closure,? which represents the ?coupling strength? of the system.Observations from Cabauw, Netherlands, and Dome C, Antarctica, are analyzed. As expected, inversions are weak for strong winds, whereas large inversions are found under weak-wind conditions. However, a sharp transition is found between those regimes, as it occurs within a narrow wind range. This results in a typical S-shaped dependency. The conceptual model explains why this characteristic must be a robust feature. Differences between the Cabauw and Dome C cases are explained from differences in coupling strength (being weaker in the Antarctic). For comparison, a realistic column model is run. As findings are similar to the simple model and the observational analysis, it suggests generality of the results.Theoretical analysis reveals that, in the transition zone near the critical wind speed, the response time of the system to perturbations becomes large. As resilience to perturbations becomes weaker, it may explain why, within this wind regime, an increase of scatter is found. Finally, the so-called heat flux duality paradox is analyzed. It is explained why numerical simulations with prescribed surface fluxes show a dynamical response different from more realistic surface-coupled systems.
