Abstract Lichens collected in 2007 on Ile Amsterdam and Ile Saint Paul in the Indian Ocean are reported. The diversity is rather poor, with 77 and 40 species collected, respectively. Of those, the islands share 25 species. Caloplaca amsterdamensis Aptroot & Ertz is newly described. Two species, viz. Lecanora subsulphurata and Opegrapha consimillima are the only other endemic species known from these islands. The lichen flora is distinctly temperate to subtropical, with only a few subantarctic elements. Temperate oceanic islands in other oceans share significantly more species with Ile Saint Paul and/or Ile Amsterdam than the neighbouring subantarctic islands. All previously reports of lichens from these islands have been examined and cross-referenced, leading to the new synonymization of several species previously described from Ile Saint Paul, viz. Buellia sancti-pauli, Caloplaca fulgescens, Lecidea conioptoides, L. parasemopsis, L. sancti-pauli, and Verrucaria aethioboliza. It also transpired that the previous report of the genus Orceolina from Ile Saint Paul is incorrect, with the effect that the genus is still only known from Kerguelen. Nearly all species are new records for Ile Amsterdam and most are new for Ile Saint Paul. Some species, viz. Bacidia arnoldiana, B. egenula, B. fraxinea, C. limonia, C. oasis, C. ulcerosa, Fuscopannaria ignobilis, Pertusaria amarescens, Porina curnowii, Porpidia ochrolemma, Pyrenula laevigata, Scoliciosporum intrusum (with the new synonym S. camptosporum), and Verrucaria dolosa are reported for the first time from the Southern Hemisphere.

Abstract Noise with periods 3 to 10 s, ubiquitous in seismic records, is expected to be mostly generated by pairs of ocean wave trains of opposing propagation directions with half the seismic frequency. Here we present the first comprehensive numerical model of microseismic generation by random ocean waves, including ocean wave reflections. Synthetic and observed seismic spectra are well correlated (r > 0.85). On the basis of the model results, noise generation events can be clustered in three broad classes: wind waves with a broad directional spectrum (class I), sea states with a significant contribution of coastal reflections (class II), and the interaction of two independent wave systems (class III). At seismic stations close to western coasts, noise generated by class II sources generally dominates, but it is intermittently outshined by the intense class III sources, limiting the reliability of seismic data as a proxy for storm climates. The modeled seismic noise critically depends on the damping of seismic waves. At some mid-ocean island stations, low seismic damping is necessary to reproduce the observed high level and smoothness of noise time series that result from a spatial integration of sources over thousands of kilometers. In contrast, some coastal stations are only sensitive to noise within a few hundreds of kilometers. This revelation of noise source patterns worldwide provides a wealth of information for seismic studies, wave climate applications, and new constraints on the possible directional distribution of wave energy.

Title Estimates of ocean wave heights and attenuation in sea ice using the SAR wave mode on Sentinel-1A. Type Journal Article

Abstract Swell evolution from the open ocean into sea ice is poorly understood, in particular the amplitude attenuation expected from scattering and dissipation. New synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from Sentinel-1A wave mode reveal intriguing patterns of bright oscillating lines shaped like instant noodles. We investigate cases in which the oscillations are in the azimuth direction, around a straight line in the range direction. This observation is interpreted as the distortion by the SAR processing of crests from a first swell, due to the presence of a second swell. Since deviations from a straight line should be proportional to the orbital velocity toward the satellite, swell height can be estimated, from 1.5 to 5 m in the present case. The evolution of this 13 s period swell across the ice pack is consistent with an exponential attenuation on a length scale of 200 km.
