Abstract

We present a short review of space-weather tools and services developed and maintained by the French space-physics community. They include unique data from ground-based observatories, advanced numerical models, automated identification and tracking tools, a range of space instrumentation and inter- connected virtual observatories. The aim of the article is to highlight some advances achieved in this field of research at the national level over the last decade and how certain assets could be combined to produce better space-weather tools exploitable by space-weather centres and customers worldwide. This review illus- trates the wide range of expertise developed nationally but is not a systematic review of all assets developed in France.

We Considered Three Spike Detection Methods Known As Coefficient Of Variation (Cov), Robust Extraction Of Baseline Signal (Rebs) And Standard Deviation Of The Background (Sd) To Detect And Filter Positive Spikes In Continuous Greenhouse Gas Time Series From Four Monitoring Stations Representative Of The European Icos (Integrated Carbon Observation System) Research Infrastructure Network. The Results Of The Different Methods Are Compared To Each Other And Against A Manual Detection Performed By Station Managers. Four Stations Were Selected As Test Cases To Apply The Spike Detection Methods: A Continental Rural Tower Of 100m Height In Eastern France (Ope), A High-mountain Observatory In The South-west Of France (Pdm), A Regional Marine Background Site In Crete (Fkl) And A Marine Clean-air Background Site In The Southern Hemisphere On Amsterdam Island (Ams). This Selection Allows Us To Address Spike Detection Problems In Time Series With Different Variability. Two Years Of Continuous Measurements Of Co2, Ch4 And Co Were Analysed. All Methods Were Found To Be Able To Detect Short-term Spikes (Lasting From A Few Seconds To A Few Minutes) In The Time Series. Analysis Of The Results Of Each Method Leads Us To Exclude The Cov Method Due To The Requirement To Arbitrarily Specify An A Priori Percentage Of Rejected Data In The Time Series, Which May Over- Or Underestimate The Actual Number Of Spikes. The Two Other Methods Freely Determine The Number Of Spikes For A Given Set Of Parameters, And The Values Of These Parameters Were Calibrated To Provide The Best Match With Spikes Known To Reflect Local Emissions Episodes That Are Well Documented By The Station Managers. More Than 96% Of The Spikes Manually Identified By Station Managers Were Successfully Detected Both In The Sd And The Rebs Methods After The Best Adjustment Of Parameter Values. At Pdm, Measurements Made By Two Analyzers Located 200m From Each Other Allow Us To Confirm That The Ch4 Spikes Identified In One Of The Time Series But Not In The Other Correspond To A Local Source From A Sewage Treatment Facility In One Of The Observatory Buildings. From This Experiment, We Also Found That The Rebs Method Underestimates The Number Of Positive Anomalies In The Ch4 Data Caused By Local Sewage Emissions. As A Conclusion, We Recommend The Use Of The Sd Method, Which Also Appears To Be The Easiest One To Implement In Automatic Data Processing, Used For The Operational Filtering Of Spikes In Greenhouse Gases Time Series At Global And Regional Monitoring Stations Of Networks Like That Of The Icos Atmosphere Network.

Abstract During summer, phytoplankton can bloom in the Arctic Ocean, both in open water and under ice, often strongly linked to the retreating ice edge. There, the surface ocean responds to steep lateral gradients in ice melt, mixing, and light input, shaping the Arctic ecosystem in unique ways not found in other regions of the world ocean. In 2016, we sampled a high-resolution grid of 135 hydrographic stations in Baffin Bay as part of the Green Edge project to study the ice-edge bloom, including turbulent vertical mixing, the under-ice light field, concentrations of inorganic nutrients, and phytoplankton biomass. We found pronounced differences between an Atlantic sector dominated by the warm West Greenland Current and an Arctic sector with surface waters originating from the Canadian archipelago. Winter overturning and thus nutrient replenishment was hampered by strong haline stratification in the Arctic domain, whereas close to the West Greenland shelf, weak stratification permitted winter mixing with high-nitrate Atlantic-derived waters. Using a space-for-time approach, we linked upper ocean dynamics to the phytoplankton bloom trailing the retreating ice edge. In a band of 60 km (or 15 days) around the ice edge, the upper ocean was especially affected by a freshened surface layer. Light climate, as evidenced by deep 0.415 mol m–2 d–1 isolumes, and vertical mixing, as quantified by shallow mixing layer depths, should have permitted significant net phytoplankton growth more than 100 km into the pack ice at ice concentrations close to 100%. Yet, under-ice biomass was relatively low at 20 mg chlorophyll-a m–2 and depth-integrated total chlorophyll-a (0–80 m) peaked at an average value of 75 mg chlorophyll-a m–2 only around 10 days after ice retreat. This phenological peak may hence have been the delayed result of much earlier bloom initiation and demonstrates the importance of temporal dynamics for constraints of Arctic marine primary production.

Abstract Temporal trend analysis of (total) mercury (THg) concentrations in Arctic biota were assessed as part of the 2021 Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) Mercury Assessment. A mixed model including an evaluation of non-linear trends was applied to 110 time series of THg concentrations from Arctic and Subarctic biota. Temporal trends were calculated for full time series (6–46 years) and evaluated with a particular focus on recent trends over the last 20 years. Three policy-relevant questions were addressed: (1) What time series for THg concentrations in Arctic biota are currently available? (2) Are THg concentrations changing over time in biota from the Arctic? (3) Are there spatial patterns in THg trends in biota from the Arctic? Few geographical patterns of recent trends in THg concentrations were observed; however, those in marine mammals tended to be increasing at more easterly longitudes, and those of seabirds tended to be increasing in the Northeast Atlantic; these should be interpreted with caution as geographic coverage remains variable. Trends of THg in freshwater fish were equally increasing and decreasing or non-significant while those in marine fish and mussels were non-significant or increasing. The statistical power to detect trends was greatly improved compared to the 2011 AMAP Mercury Assessment; 70% of the time series could detect a 5% annual change at the 5% significance level with power ≥ 80%, while in 2011 only 19% met these criteria. Extending existing time series, and availability of new, powerful time series contributed to these improvements, highlighting the need for annual monitoring, particularly given the spatial and temporal information needed to support initiatives such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Collecting the same species/tissues across different locations is recommended. Extended time series from Alaska and new data from Russia are also needed to better establish circumarctic patterns of temporal trends.
