Abstract 16th Annual Meeting of Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, La Haye, 7-11 may 2006

Due to their geographical isolation, the salmonids population living in Kerguelen islands may be potentially protected against the most of uncontrolled anthropic influences such as environmental pollutions.
Two geographical areas were prospected between january and mars 2005 in function of their distance from the sea. Water samples were taken to determine their physico-chemical characteristics. Fish were catched to evaluate nonspecific components of their immune response. Number of peripheral blood leucocytes, spleno-somatic index and lytic activities of blood and head kidney phagocytes were determined.
Some differences in immunologic response of fish were noticed between the two sites more or less far from the sea in relation to the water's physico-chemical characteristics.
Salmonids introduced in Kerguelen's may constitute a particular fish population in regards of their geographical isolation. The immunologic markers investigated in this fish population may provide a major data basis of responses of these biological tests in wild fish populations.
