  Abstract (down) This paper is devoted to the simultaneous determination of the coseismic and postseismic gravitational changes caused by the great 2004 December 26 Sumatra–Andaman earthquake from the time-variable global gravity fields recovered by the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission. Furthermore, a complete modelling of the elasto-gravitational response of a self-gravitating, spherically layered, elastic earth model is carried out using a normal-modes summation for comparison with the observed coseismic gravitational change. Special attention is paid to the ocean mass redistribution. Special care is paid during the inversion of the data to avoid contamination of tectonic gravity changes by ocean tidal model errors, seasonal and interannual signals originating from continental hydrology and oceanic circulation as well as contamination of the coseismic gravity change by the postseismic relaxation. We use a 4.6-yr-long time-series of global gravity solutions including 26 months of postseismic data, provided by the Groupe de Recherche en Géodésie Spatiale (GRGS). For comparison, the Release-04 solutions of the Center for Space Research (CSR) are also investigated after a spectral windowing or a Gaussian spatial smoothing. Results are shown both in terms of geoid height changes and gravity variations. Coseismic and postseismic gravitational changes estimated from the different gravity solutions are globally similar, although their spatial extent and amplitude depend on the type of filter used in the processing of GRACE fields. The highest signal-to-noise ratio is found with the GRGS solutions. The postseismic signature has a spectral content closer to the GRACE bandwidth than the coseismic signature and is therefore better detected by GRACE. The coseismic signature consists mainly of a strong gravity decrease east of the Sunda trench, in the Andaman Sea. A gravity increase is also detected at a smaller scale, west of the trench. The model for the coseismic gravity changes agrees well with the coseismic signature estimated from GRACE, regarding the overall shape and orientation, location with respect to the trench and order of magnitude. Coseismic gravity changes are followed by a postseismic relaxation that are well fitted by an increasing exponential function with a mean relaxation time of 0.7 yr. The total postseismic gravity change consists of a large-scale positive anomaly centred above the trench and extending over 15° of latitude along the subduction. After 26 months, the coseismic gravity decrease has been partly compensated by the postseismic relaxation, but a negative anomaly still remains south of Phuket. A dominant gravity increase extends over 15° of latitude west of the trench, being maximal south of the epicentre area. By investigating analyses of two global hydrology models and one ocean general circulation model, we show that our GRACE estimates of the coseismic and postseismic gravitational changes are almost not biased by interannual variations originating from continental hydrology and ocean circulation in the subduction area and in the central part of the Andaman Sea, while they are biased by several μGal in the Malay Peninsula

  Abstract (down) This paper investigates the terrestrial radiation impacts on the soft error (SE) sensitivity along the very large-scale integration (VLSI) roadmap of bulk, FDSOI and finFET nano-scale technologies thanks to MUSCA SEP3 tool. The terrestrial radiations considered in this work include neutrons, protons, muon particles and alpha-emitters.
The results indicate that protons and muons must be taken into account for ground environments. However, significant differences were observed for bulk, FDSOI and FinFET technologies. The downscaling induces an increase in SEU susceptibility to radiation. An overall analysis indicates that the SER does not increase drastically with the technological integration, and for the three technologies considered. Moreover, the results show that FDSOI and FinFET technologies provide resistance to ionizing radiation effects due to narrow sensitive volumes. At the ground altitudes, the total SER ranges from 103 and 104 FIT/Mbit for the planar bulk technology while it ranges from 102 and 103 FIT/Mbit for the FDSOI and FinFET technologies.
Results and analyses show that for the avionic altitude, the neutron and/or the proton environments induce the main contribution to the total SER, however the muon and -SER impacts are negligible. For the 45-nm technological node (all types), the neutron contribution is around 60 to 70 % of the total SER. Concerning the ground altitude, -SER is the main contribution down to the 28-nm node. Typically, the a-SER is around a few hundred to a thousand FIT/Mbit. Moreover, results suggest muon-induced upset does affect the soft error rate from 32-nm SRAM operated at nominal supply voltage, and they have a significant impact for circuits fabricated in smaller process technologies (22-nm and 14-nm). In addition, results show that muon impact can be the main contribution from 22-nm and beyond. Then, future terrestrial error rate predictions will require characterizations of the linear energy transfer (LET) threshold, consideration of the muon and/or proton environments.

  Abstract (down) This paper investigates the impact of ground albedo neutrons in the terrestrial radiation field and their seasonal variations. A modeling methodology is proposed, it is based on ATMORAD (atmospheric shower modeling) and GEANT4 simulations taking into account the soil characteristics and hydrogen content. This method was validated thanks to neutron measurements performed in two high altitude stations located in medium geomagnetic latitude and Antarctica (Pic-du-Midi and Concordia, respectively). Thus, the chemical rock composition, the density, the water content and the snow pack impacts to neutron spectrum were investigated. Simulated and measured spectra were compared. Analyses show that variations are dominant in the thermal domain (i.e. En <;0.5 eV) and lesser degree in epithermal and evaporation domains (i.e. 0.5 eV <; En <;0.1 MeV and 0.1 MeV <; En <;20 MeV, respectively). The last part investigates the impact induced by the evaporation neutron contribution to Single Event Rate (more impacted by the ground albedo neutron). Results show that evaporation neutrons contribution to the total SER should be assessed for high-sensitive technologies.

  Abstract (down) This paper investigates the abundance and distribution of Pleuragramma antarcticum larvae by size class in the Dumont dUrville Sea from 2004 to 2010. Samples were collected between Dumont dUrville station and the Mertz Glacier Tongue onboard the RV lAstrolabe for studying the inter-annual and spatial distribution of fish larvae and the TRV Umitaka Maru for looking at life stages vertical distributions. The seabed depression adjacent to the Mertz Glacier Tongue and in Commonwealth Bay hosted high abundances of small P. antarcticum larvae, while larger larvae were found in lower abundance and further offshore. We found that canyons, sea ice, stability of the water column and temperatures are important features for determining suitable areas for young larvae.

  Abstract (down) This paper describes the assembly of an updated quasi-global dataset of higher-frequency sea level information obtained from tide gauges operated by many agencies around the world. We believe that the construction of such a dataset is fundamental to scientific research in sea level variability and also to practical aspects of coastal engineering. A first version of the dataset was used in approximately a dozen published studies, and this second version is about twice the size, containing longer and more geographically representative sea level records. The dataset has acquired a digital object identifier and may be obtained from several sources. The paper mentions some of the merits of and deficiencies with the present version and takes a forward look at how the dataset may be updated in the future.

  Abstract (down) This paper describes a major update to the quasi-global, higher-frequency sea-level dataset known as GESLA (Global Extreme Sea Level Analysis). Versions 1 (released 2009) and 2 (released 2016) of the dataset have been used in many published studies, across a wide range of oceanographic and coastal engineering-related investigations concerned with evaluating tides, storm surges, extreme sea levels, and other related processes. The third version of the dataset (released 2021), presented here, contains double the number of years of data, and nearly four times the number of records, compared to Version 2. The dataset consists of records obtained from multiple sources around the world. This paper describes the assembly of the dataset, its processing, and its format, and outlines potential future improvements.

  Abstract (down) This paper demonstrates an inversion of surface CO2 fluxes using concentrations derived from assimilation of satellite radiances. Radiances come from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and are assimilated within the system of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. We evaluate the quality of the inverted fluxes by comparing simulated concentrations with independent airborne measurements. As a benchmark we use an inversion based on surface flask measurements and another using only the global concentration trend. We show that the AIRS-based inversion is able to improve the match to the independent data compared to the prior estimate but that it usually performs worse than either the flask-based or trend-based inversion.

A new detection method based on a matched fi lter is introduced. Four original match templates are presented and tested against original blue whale subspecies calls. The mathematical formulas of these templates, defi ned by Gaussian curve models, are provided. The detection threshold is based on the correlation coeffi cients. The threshold was set to reduce false detections obtained on simulated signals at various signal-to-noise ratios. We focus our work on the true detections of whale calls. Moreover, to obtain a real-time system, we decrease the computational time by decimating the recorded signal (Fs=250Hz). We show that this new method enables us to effectively detect both subspecies in various ambient noises, in the Southern Ocean. *** Dans ce papier, les sons de basses fréquences émis par les baleines bleues Antarctique (Balaenoptera musculus intermedia) et pygmées (B. m. brevicauda) dans le secteur sud ouest de l'Océan Indien ont été détecté automatiquement à partir d'une technique de fi ltrage adapté. Pour ce faire, des signaux synthétiques ont été créés à partir de signaux originaux en modélisant leurs équations mathématiques à partir de courbes gaussiennes. La détection se fait alors par la corrélation entre le signal entrant et le modèle calculé (template). Le seuil de détection a été choisi au préalable en simulant une série de signaux dans des rapports signal sur bruit différents. Au fi nal, un seuil de détection élevé a été choisi pour minimiser les fausses alarmes au risque d'augmenter les détections manquées. Pour diminuer le temps de calcul, le signal original (Fe=250Hz) a été décimé. Cette méthode originale c'est révélée très effi cace pour détecter les sons émis par ces deux sous espèces de baleines bleues dans des niveaux de bruit ambiant très variés comme c'est le cas dans cette partie de l'Océan Indien.
