Abstract |
Although essential to fully understand the cycling of mercury at the global scale, mercury species records in the Southern Hemisphere are scarce. Under the framework of the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) project, a monitoring station has been set up on Amsterdam Island (37°48´ S, 77°34´ E) in the remote southern Indian Ocean. For the first time in the Southern Hemisphere, a 2-year record of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) and particle-bound mercury (PBM) is presented. GEM concentrations were remarkably steady (1.03 ± 0.08 ng m−3) while RGM and PBM concentrations were very low and exhibited a strong variability (mean: 0.34 pg m−3, range: < detection limit–4.07 pg m−3; and mean: 0.67 pg m−3, range: < detection limit–12.67 pg m−3, respectively). Despite the remoteness of the island, wind sector analysis, air mass back trajectories and the observation of radonic storms highlighted a long-range contribution from the southern African continent to the GEM and PBM budgets from July to September during the biomass burning season. Low concentrations of GEM were associated with southerly polar and marine air masses from the remote southern Indian Ocean. This unique data set provides new baseline GEM concentrations in the Southern Hemisphere midlatitudes while mercury speciation along with upcoming wet deposition data will help to improve our understanding of the mercury cycle in the marine boundary layer. |

Abstract |
Increasing levels of poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) have recently been described in Arctic biota. These emerging substances are of concern given their resistance to degradation and metabolization. Some studies have reported endocrine disrupting effects for some PFASs. However, there is a gap of knowledge on the potential relationships between PFASs and hormones mediating the life-history trade-off between reproduction and survival, such as glucocorticoids. The aims of this study were to (1) describe the concentrations of plasma perfluoroalkyl sulfonates and perfluoroalkyl carboxylates in Svalbard black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) in relation to gender and body-condition, (2) explore the relationships between PFASs and corticosterone (the major glucocorticoid in birds), and (3) assess the consequences of PFAS exposure for reproductive success. Perfluorononanoate was positively related to body-condition in male kittiwakes; perfluorotridecanoate and perfluorotetradecanoate to decreased baseline corticosterone in both sexes; and perfluorododecanoate was related to lower hatching success. These results underline the importance of considering each compound separately when investigating the hazardous effects of PFASs on wildlife.

Abstract |

Abstract |
Background and aims – The limnoterrestrial and aquatic diatom flora of the entire Antarctic Region (sub-Antarctic islands, Maritime Antarctic Region, Antarctic Continent) is currently under revision. One of the genera that still needed a thorough analysis is the genus Halamphora, recently split off from Amphora. Halamphora species are a typical constituent of the lake diatom flora in the Antarctic region.
Methods – Using both Light Microscopical (LM) and Scanning Electron Microscopical (SEM) techniques, the morphology of a large number of Halamphora taxa, present in the samples from the Antarctic Region, has been analysed. Each taxon is properly described, illustrated and compared with other morphologically similar Halamphora taxa, known worldwide.
Key results – A total of seven Halamphora taxa has been found. Two taxa could be identified using the currently available literature: Halamphora veneta (Kütz.) Levkov and H. oligotraphenta (Lange-Bert.) Levkov. Five new Halamphora species are described: Halamphora ausloosiana Van de Vijver & Kopalová sp. nov., H. compereana Van de Vijver & Levkov sp. nov., H. dagmarobbelsiana Van de Vijver & Levkov sp. nov., H. lateantarctica Van de Vijver, Kopalová, Zidarova & Levkov sp. nov. and H. vyvermaniana Van de Vijver, Kopalová, Zidarova & Levkov sp. nov.
Conclusions – The obtained results confirm the presence of a typical and highly specific limnoterrestrial diatom flora in the Antarctic Region and contradict the generally accepted idea about the worldwide distribution of diatoms. |

Abstract |
During a study of the freshwater diatom flora of some hot springs on the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands, an unknown Brachysira species was observed. Detailed morphological analysis using both light and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed sufficient morphological differences to separate this species as Brachysira sandrae sp. nov. The new species belongs to the complex of taxa around B. brebissonii . The type material of Navicula brachysira , most likely the type of B. brebissonii , was studied to reveal its morphological ultrastructure. The new species is compared with B. brebissonii and with similar Brachysira taxa worldwide.

Abstract |
The liverworts of Île Amsterdam are surveyed. On the basis of historical collections and specimens collected on the island in 2006 and 2007 some 29 species and one variety belonging to 18 families have been recorded. This means that in comparison with the last survey of the island's hepatics, in 2002, the number of taxa has been nearly doubled. Of these, eight taxa are recorded for the first time from the island, namely Kurzia capillaris (Sw.) Grolle subsp. Stephanii (Renauld ex Steph.) Pós, Adelanthus lindenbergianus (Lehm.) Mitt., Syzygiella colorata (Lehm.) K.Feldberg, Váňa, Hentschel et J.Heinrichs, S. sonderi (Gottsche) K.Feldberg, Váňa, Hentschel et J.Heinrichs, Cephaloziella varians (Gottsche) Steph., Anastrophyllum auritum (Lehm.) Steph., Andrewsianthus marionensis (S.W.Arnell) Grolle and Heterogemma patagonica (Herzog et Grolle) L.Söderstr. et Váňa, whilst Aneura subcanaliculata R.M.Schust. is excluded from the island's hepatic flora. Two taxa, Kurzia capillaris subsp. Stephanii and Gymnomitrion subintegrum (S.W.Arnell) Váňa, are illustrated, and maps of global distribution are presented for Plagiochila minutula (Hook.f. et Taylor) Gottsche, Lindenb. et Nees, Andrewsianthus marionensis, Heterogemma patagonica, Mnioloma fuscum and Gymnomitrion subintegrum. The liverwort flora is distinctly south-temperate to tropical and these two main distribution patterns consist of 12 and eight species, respectively. The subantarctic element is represented by only three species, two species are endemic or near-endemic and five bipolar. Two names, Riccardia insularis Schiffn. and R. novo-amstelodamensis Schiffn., are lectotypified. |
